STEVE WAY and JON SHARKEY set to represent their country

Most will by now be aware that two BAC athletes, Steve Way and Jon Sharkey, have been selected to represent England in the Anglo-Celtic Plate 100k, to be run at Gravesend on 3 May 2014, but their achievement deserves to be marked with some explanation of their journeys to this goal.
Steve‘s first foray into the 100k distance was in an open event in Stockholm on 4 August 2013. Of course he was familiar by then with Ultra-Distance, albeit just halfway to 100k, as he had competed in the 50k World Championships in 2012 in Italy, and won, with the result, of course, that we have in our midst nothing less than a WORLD CHAMPION. And Steve‘s run in Stockholm was worthy of a World Champion. Over 100k his split times hardly varied from 3.59/4.01, an incredibly disciplined run, and over the 12 lap course he lapped every other competitor. Steve‘s time of 6.40.14 ensured his place in athletics history, as he has become the 5th fastest British man over 100k EVER, and his selection for the Anglo-Celtic Plate competition was inevitable. Regrettably, as the 100k World Championship for 2013, scheduled to take place in South Africa, was cancelled and not re-arranged, Steve was denied the opportunity of achieving a second World Championship Title, but that doesn’t alter the fact that, in 2013, he was the fastest man in the World over the 100k distance.
In the meantime, Jon had decided it was about time that his well-deserved rest following his debut Ironman Triathlon earlier in 2013 came to an end and, encouraged and inspired by Steve, decided to take up the 100k challenge, and why not attempt a qualifying time for consideration for selection for the England team alongside Steve? The only problem was that races where this can be done are limited in number, and the only opportunity available to Jon was the Newcastle Racecourse Marathon, which incorporated a 50k race alongside the marathon and other distances, and a 3.22 50k time is one of the qualifying times. So, despite not having enough time to train fully for this distance before the race date of 8 December 2013, Jon decided to go for it anyway – after all the 100k at Gravesend is an Open 100k, so he’d still be able to compete even if not selected for the Anglo-Celtic Plate. But Jon knew exactly what he had to do at Newcastle to give himself a chance – ignore everyone else and run his own pace. And that is just what he did. The course was almost 19 laps of the racecourse and each lap was run in a remarkably even 6.24/6.29. Although, at the start, Jon was left in the wake of a number of other competitors he won the race by a huge margin of 30 minutes or so, double-lapping the second finisher. But, most importantly, Jon‘s time of 3.19.21 was within the qualifying time he sought, and it was just a question of waiting till February when the team for Gravesend would be announced.  And, sure enough, Jon‘s name was there!

The England team for the Anglo-Celtic Plate consists of five athletes.  Of those five, two (40%) will come from BAC.  All at BAC can justifiably feel very proud of Steve and Jon, and we wish them well with their training and for the competition itself at Gravesend on 3 May.

Membership

Membership – Just a short note to thank all those members who have renewed their membership which was due on 1st January. Can I remind all other members that their fees are now overdue and should be paid as soon as possible. Application Forms are available from the office at Kings Park Athletics Stadium or can be downloaded from the website. I would just mention that the Club will only pay the England Athletics Fee for those who have paid their membership. Those who have not done so will not be eligible for selection for the Club for the coming season. If there are any queries regarding membership, they can be passed to me either by emailing the Club or by leaving a message at the office.

News Round-Up (Parkruns, Boscombe 5k, U11 races, County XC Champs)

There were BAC wins at both Bournemouth and Poole Parkruns on Saturday 18 January – Rob McTaggart (again) winning at Kings Park, followed in second place overall, and first lady, by Emma Dews. Also running at Bournemouth were Roy Long and son David Long (the course record holder), Jud Kirk, Ian White, Steve Cox and Will Price. In Poole Park the overall winner was Peter Thompson followed in third place by Simon Way whose time of 17.35 knocked 10 seconds off his PB. Also representing BAC at Poole was Elsa Charlwood.

The previous day saw the 4th of the 6 Boscombe Pier 5k Winter Series organised by Poole Runners at which there was yet another BAC win in the form of recent signing Lee Piercy who was first across the line in 17.03.  Also competing were Steve Cohen (15th 19.09), Steve Cox (37th 20.14), Jud Kirk (38th 20.16), Caroline Rowley (63rd 21.50) and Will Price (123rd 26.01).  In all 151 finished.

As previously reported on Saturday 11 January BAC hosted a fixture of the Hampshire Cross Country League in Kings Park. Before the League races proper a 2k (approximately) race was held for U11s, and the Senior Mens’ and Womens’ races doubled as the Dorset County Championship.

In the U11 races a number of athletes who have been attending the BAC Junior Development Evenings each Wednesday competed. These Wednesday evenings are for youngsters aged 11 to 14 (ish) who want to sample athletics and experience an organised programme supervised by qualified coaches which offers the opportunity to try all aspects of athletics – running, jumping and throwing, together with some ‘fun’ competition. On a typical Wednesday evening up to 100 and more youngsters attend. So congratulations to Conor Charlwood (a BAC Junior), Freddie Harrington, Isaac Naraine, Elliott Brampton, Laura Reeves, Yasmin Bridet, Lily Simpson, Ruby Eve Bowden, Sienna May and Isabelle Rowland for taking the plunge and having a go at an organised, official race. The County Championship was not as well supported as it might have been, considering the number of eligible athletes already running in the League races, but congratulations to Steve Way on his County Silver Medal. The results are set out below; there is something of a mystery in that Josh Cole entered the Championship and definitely ran, and ran well, but doesn’t appear in the results – perhaps Josh didn’t collect his number?? Had he counted he would have been outside the medals by a matter of seconds. Here are the results:

Dorset Road Race League 2013 BAC winners

The Dorset Road Race League consists of a series of 12 road races of varying distances throughout the year and is a team and individual competition. The successful running of the League is in no small measure thanks to our very own Sam Munro and Sam is to be congratulated on a very slick presentation of the numerous awards (assisted by husband Simon) which took place on 1 January at the Junction Leisure Centre after the ‘Broadstone Quarter’.  In addition to their trophy many of the ladies also received a prize donated by Lush.  To win an award requires a considerable level of commitment as at least seven of the races must have been completed to count at all, or all twelve to achieve the ‘Fidelity’ award. So well done to all the BAC winners, but particular congratulations to Simon Munro for winning the competition outright, to the Mens’ Team on winning the Division 1 team competition, and to the Ladies’ Team on winning the Division 2 ladies’ team competition, thus securing promotion to Division 1 for 2014. There is also an award for the best male and female performance of each competing club. The complete list of individual BAC winners is as follows:

Introducing your new look BAC Website

What is happening?

As many of you will be aware I have been maintaining the club website since 2010 but the basic structure of the site is based on another site I used to administer from 2003.  Over the past 10 years a lot has changed on the internet; in general terms there has been the explosion in social media and in Athletics we have the Power of 10 to track results and rankings across the UK.  The BAC website has been redesigned with the following goals:

  • More community involvement.  Having myself as the single update point of contact strongly discourages member contributions as well as acts as a bottleneck for updates from those members who do give me content to upload.  The new website will allow any vetted member to update the website but the club will still maintain administrative control (initially updates will be possible by committee members or team managers, the process is still self-registering, as described below).
  • Any updates made by members are reflected immediately on the site and do not have to wait several days for me to get around to uploading the change.
  • The update mechanism is simple, using a third party ‘blogging’ tool users can log in to the site and create articles in one of the pre-defined sections.
  • Cost: When I was approached by a company with a similar proposal 5 years ago or so I was quoted £5 per member to achieve something similar.  Times have moved on and the total cost of the website to the club will remain unchanged at £30 per year, less than half the cost of a full subscription.
  • Social Media Integration: Although it feels like ‘jumping on the bandwagon’, it will be possible to tweet or post articles to Facebook.  I can add other social media sites on request.
  • The ability to comment on contributions and have a discussion on the post.  If something was accidentally omitted or there was some other error then a conversation can happen in the comments and the original post updated if required.

How does it work?

On the front page the menu structure has changed, there are now 3 main drop downs:

  • Official Content – Published by the Club.  Information such as membership pages and consolidated track / field fixtures will continue to be administered by the club.  The community is not expected to have to make changes to these pages but if necessary please email me at darryn@bournemouthathleticclub.co.uk and I will be happy to make any changes.
  • Community Content – Generated by Members.  These are the pages which consist of consolidated contributions from club members such as road running reports, cross country reports, track reports etc.  The news items are now also generated by the community but the club reserves the right to produce ‘featured’ items which may remain shown for longer.
  • Links.  With the rise of Power of 10 and other athletics results services it is a duplication of effort for me to maintain the results / rankings aswell.  This was a move I made last year, to just maintain a list of links to the Power of 10 site for track results / rankings but this redesign makes it more obvious.

How do I contribute?

Firstly, remember anybody can read what you publish in news articles and posts.  What you write will appear online immediately and should not reflect poorly on the club (e.g. no swearing etc.).  I will administer the site to ensure there are no inappropriate articles.

  1. To contribute, log in to the site.  Select ‘Login’ from the community content drop down.
  2. You will be presented with the ‘WordPress’ log in screen, this is the third party software which enables community contribution.  You can register for an account and then log in. Your details will not, under any circumstances be used to send you spam.
  3. Once logged in you will be re-directed to the administration screen.  Depending on your role you will see different options here but by default you will have the ability to create content on the site and comment on existing articles.
  4. Create a new post.  (Posts –> Add New).  Write a title and the body of your post.  You can include anything you want here, downloads (Add Media), links to external sites etc. and format your post as you see fit. If you are creating a post for the Photos page just include all your photos as media items.
  5. Very Important: Before publishing you must assign your content a Category, by ticking the appropriate checkbox beside the desired category.  The category you select here will determine which page your post appears on, for example ‘News’ will show your post on the news page as well.  Links to the most recent content are published on the homepage, sorted by last date modified.
  6. If you do not see your item on the website it is probably because you did not select a category.
  7. Select ‘Publish’.  If you want to edit your post you can select it from the ‘All Posts’ link, modify it and select ‘update’.
  8. You don’t need to be logged in to reply to articles but if you are it makes it clearer who is posting the comment.  There is a ‘Reply’ button above each article if you want to comment on it and it is also possible to have a discussion here.  Please don’t be afraid to ask questions, correct content or talk about the article here.

News News Items.  Create news items that you think will be of interest to other members.  Highlight selection of your team mate into some big race, appeal for help finding a missing set of spikes or let everybody know about an upcoming race.  Use your imagination.  The most recent stories will be listed on the home page but club news (e.g. notification of upcoming AGM) may take priority.

These changes are being made to encourage contribution by members and more of a sense of club spirit.  Please let me know if there are any other features which you feel would be useful or any problems with the existing setup (darryn@bournemouthathleticclub.co.uk).  This is a big redesign so please be patient whilst we work out the kinks.
