Every Wednesday evening Bournemouth Athletic Club runs a Junior Development session intended to provide the opportunity for School Years 4 to 11 (minimum age 8 years) to take part and receive coaching in running, jumping and throwing activities.
An information leaflet about the evenings is available to download here. Please note – there have been some procedural changes as outlined below, and there is now a requirement to book sessions in advance.
These sessions take place at the Athletics Track in Kings Park each Wednesday from 6 pm to 7.30 pm. Prior registration for 10 week ‘blocks’ of training is required as detailed below. The activities are supervised by UKA qualified coaches, all of whom have DBS certificates. Once registered and accepted, it is essential to attend by 5.45 pm each Wednesday so that attendance can be recorded before the activities commence.
Bournemouth Athletic Club is committed to providing a high standard of coaching to all of our young athletes. As a club, we also have a desire to encourage and support our athletes to progress to competing for the club at competitions.
As a step towards these objectives, Parents/Guardians are now requested to pay for their young athletes’ participation in advance for a fixed 10 week training block, rather than the ‘pay as you go’ system previously in operation. The year will be made up of 5 fixed 10 week blocks with a 2 week break over the Christmas and New Year period.
To ensure that children who are motivated to learn about athletics receive the maximum benefit, we have limited the total number attending to a maximum of 120 per week across all year groups catered for. This means that Parents/Guardians will need to register their child/children to participate the Wednesday evening activities.
Allocation of places is on a ‘first come first served’ basis although priority is given to those young athletes who are BAC members. In the event that the maximum number of 120 children registering for any 10 week training block is exceeded, a waiting list will be created and reviewed towards the end of each 10 week period. Please note that the 10 week block commencing 12 October 2016 is full, although names can be added to a waiting list. Registration for the next block commencing 4 January 2017 will open before 14 December 2014, on a date to be announced.
Registration forms are available from the club office up at the track.
Training block dates and prices are as follows:
- Training Block 1: Wednesday 12th October – Wednesday 14th December 2016. This block is fully subscribed.
- NOTE – Break: Wednesday 21st December – Wednesday 28th December inclusive.
- Training Block 2: Wednesday 4th January – Wednesday 8th March 2017
- Training Block 3: Wednesday 15th March – Wednesday 17th May 2017
- Training Block 4: Wednesday 24th May – Wednesday 26th July 2017
- Training Block 5: Wednesday 2nd August – Wednesday 4th October 2017
- The cost of each 10 week training block will be £20 for BAC members and £40 for non-members. Membership forms for joining BAC can be obtained from the office.
There will be a maximum age of (up to and including) 14 years catered for on a Wednesday Development evening. From the age of 15, young athletes will be expected to move to Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday training (depending on availability) if they wish to continue with their training.
At the point of registration, all Parents/Guardians will also be asked to sign a code of conduct on behalf of their children (please see important notice below). This is designed to ensure that an expected level of behaviour and commitment is adhered to by all.
Parents/Guardians will be handed the Club’s ‘Code of Conduct – Parents with parental responsibility’ (see link here) and the ‘Code of Conduct for young people engaged in athletics activities’ (see link here), and asked to acknowledge receipt. The Club also has a ‘Coaches Code of Conduct’ which can be seen here.
All of our Codes of Conduct can be found on this page of our website.
On Wednesday April 13 (years 3,4 and 5) and 20 (years 6+) 2016 ‘Super 3’ competitions were held, in which competitors competed in three events, involving jumping, running and throwing. Certificates were awarded to all who participated, and medals were awarded to the first three in each School Year, boys and girls. Please see links below for the results of the 2016 ‘Super 3’ competitions, and also the results from previous years.
There are a number of competitions coming up which are available to the ‘Junior Development’ age groups (for many of these membership of BAC would be required as they are not all ‘open’ competitions), both Cross Country and Sportshall (indoor athletics).
