Hampshire League, Farley Mount, Winchester - 8th October 2011
What a weekend for BAC Senior Mens' Team!! It all started at the first Hampshire League Cross Country of the season at Farley Mount, Winchester on Saturday 8 October, where, in the Senior Mens' Race, BAC scored one of the lowest, if not the lowest, score in its history. Outstanding runs by the five scorers meant that the team lies second in Division 1, led only by the ever-strong Aldershot District & Farnham. Ian Habgood led the yellow charge in 11th place, followed only three places later by a clearly in-form Rob McTaggart. Within seconds came Steve Way, a remarkable run considering that, since his amazing performance in the London Marathon, Steve has deservedly been back-pedalling, not to mention dealing with a niggling injury. Jacek Cieluszecki clearly enjoyed his first cross country race on British soil, showing his strength and potential, and club captain Simon Munro completed the scoring team, as high as 21st in the overall race. This was a real team effort, with all the scoring members finishing within either three or, mostly, two positions of each other, with a total score of only 82 to secure the second spot. Mention should also be made of Karl Welch, whose time and position, only two behind Simon, would probably, on any other day, have put him in the scoring team. It was pleasing to see BAC represented in some numbers, with Andy Jennings, Joe Price, Ian Graham and Andy Gillespie also competing. Unfortunately, there were only two veterans (Ian and Andy) amongst the squad, which means that, without a veterans' team (which requires three), BAC cannot now compete in the veterans' team competition.
However, Josh King, Harry Horton-Hill and Brendan Kirkton did make up a U17 mens' team, which lies fourth in the table after this first event. In the U15 boys' race, Corrie Norton and Lewis Golden flew the flag for BAC, finishing 18th and 29th respectively in a field of 64, and in the U13 girls' race Bridget Dence, who has represented Dorset in the Inter-Counties, finishing 4th, was the first Dorset girl home, and, in her debut race, Ella Sykes did very well to finish 11th out of 65.
The next day, Ian Habgood, Steve Way and Simon Munro were to be part of the team which clinched the Dorset Road Race League for BAC for 2011! (See separate League report)
