Hampshire League Cross Country - Kings Park - 12th January 2013

There were some outstanding performances at the Hampshire Cross Country League races, organised by BAC in Kings Park, on Saturday 12 January, particularly from BAC's Senior Mens' team, and from Bridget Dence and Glen Balfour in the U15 Girls' and U13 Boys' races, all in appalling conditions, with mud to the extent never before seen in parts of Kings Park, and, particularly for the final race, continuous very heavy rain. The Senior Mens' and Womens' races doubled as the Dorset County Championship, and medals were won by Steve Way and Jacek Cieluszecki.

With one race to go in the League, the Senior Mens' team, with a very strong performance, should have consolidated our position in Division 1, having finished on the day as no less than second team, led only by the all-conquering Aldershot, Farnham & District. Steve and Jacek were first and second BAC, winning gold and silver County Championship medals in the process, followed by David Long, who is really showing his quality. Club Captain Simon Munro, ever present and leading by example, was our fourth scorer, and the team was completed by Rob McTaggart, who would say this wasn't his best day, but nevertheless his position was more than good enough to bring the team to second. The result is that BAC now lies 6th of 9 complete teams in the League, and things would have to go very wrong indeed at the final race, at Salisbury on 9 February, for us not to retain our Division 1 status, but another strong performance would help us to overtake Winchester & District, not far ahead of us in 5th. In the Kings Park race, David Long was 4th U20, and in the aggregate individual positions for the season is 5th U20 - an excellent achievement. Jacek Cieluszecki is also going well in the individual competition, lying at present a very impressive 10th in the individual Senior Men aggregate positions.

Bridget Dence continued to show her form in the U15 Girls' race, coming through strongly from further down the field to finish no less than third, an excellent run which means that Bridget's individual aggregate position at present is also third of the U15 Girls. Glen Balfour also features in the top 10 individual aggregate positions, lying, as he does, as 9th U13 Boy, after an impressive run in Kings Park, in which he was 12th in his race. Lewis Golden, who is to be commended for so regularly donning the BAC vest to compete, ran well in the muddy conditions to finish well up in the U15 Boys' race.

BAC hasn't had a representative in the Senior/Veteran Womens' race for some years now, so it was pleasing to see Janie Chapman running her first Cross Country race, and finishing as the 13th Veteran. Also running Cross Country races for the first time were Manol Dimitrov (although Manol is well used to long, multi-terrain events) and Steve Cox. Spare a thought for Graeme Miller, suffering from cramp during the final lap, but nevertheless persevering to the finish.
