Junction Half Marathon (1st Dorset League 2011 race) - Sunday 2 January 2011
A total of 16 BAC members competed in the Junction (previously Broadstone) Quarter Marathon on Sunday 2 January, achieving a number of wins, including, importantly, a League win in this, the first Dorset Road Race League event of the new year. Normally, this race is staged on New Year's Day, and the one day delay this year clearly helped Rob McTaggart, the overall winner of the race (by a clear 2 minutes), to recover from the New Year's Eve celebrations! Simon Munro, in third position, and Ian White, hopefully fully recovered from a calf injury, in fourth, separated by less than 25 seconds, completed the winning BAC team. The second team, although, as is usual, not winning a prize, was also a BAC team, consisting of Robin Copestick, Tony Chutter, who was just squeezed into 2nd V50 position by Egdon Heath's Alan Beavers, and Paul Chapman, competing for the first time in a BAC vest. Other BAC winners were Chris Birch, as 1st V60 starting 2011 as he means to continue, and Joe Price, 1st Junior Man. Another FIRST for this race must surely be that BAC's LAST finisher was none other than Jon Sharkey, explained by the fact that, before the race, Jon had run about 11 miles, then had paused to don fancy dress, before 'competing' as part of a group also dressed in various disguises. One of the most remarkable sights of the day was Lord Charles? (aka Jon Sharkey) running in little circles round the car park after the race, apparently with a view to getting his mileage up to 17 miles!
