Sturminster Half Marathon - 29th July 2012

Steve Way and Ian Habgood have both been very busy over the last two weeks! At the BMC Grand Prix at Solihull on 21 July Steve ran a superb PB of 14.41.92 in the 5000m, and Ian, too, was on top form, also running a PB of 15.01.12. Many, many athletes would have been delighted with this, but Ian expressed disappointment that his run didn't quite dip below 15 minutes! Then, the next day, both Steve and Ian ran in the Elite race at the Charles Bennett Olympic Mile, as reported elsewhere. A week later, and another busy weekend. On Saturday 28 July, Steve ran for the club in the 5000m at the BAL fixture at Kings Park, and, at the same meeting, BAC was represented by Ian in the 1500m. Then, the next day, Sunday 29 July, both Steve and Ian had excellent runs in conditions which at times were not ideal, with heavy rain and a headwind, in the Stur Half Marathon, starting and finishing at Sturminster Newton. Steve ran his best half marathon this year, winning the race in 1.09.10, followed, in second place, less than a minute later, by Ian Habgood, also, at 1.10.07, running his best half marathon of the year. Running extremely well were Club Captain Simon Munro, who was fourth in 1.16.01, also improving this year's half marathon time, and Graeme Miller, tenth in 1.20.47 - another year's best, with Simon and Graeme completing the winning BAC team. Fortunately, these excellent positions were sufficient to ensure that Ian Graham's 69th position (1.32.38 - 1st V60) was enough to ward off the challenge in this race from Wimborne Athletic Club for the first Road Race League spot. Also competing for BAC were Andy Gillespie, who is to be congratulated on running at all, after many hours, including a night without any sleep, controlling traffic in connection with the Olympic Cycle Road Race. Andy was 127th in 1.39.34, and, finishing 174th, was Club Chairman Dave Parsons, in 1.44.34. Altogether, there were 409 finishers of the race.
