Match Report by Tim Hughes
Bournemouth Athletic Club’s Men’s British Athletics League season got off to a flying start at Barnet Copthall in London finishing in fourth place in the eight team match. Team Manager Tim Hughes was particularly impressed with the high enthusiasm of the athletes for the team to do well. It was also a match which saw a high number of Personal Bests on the track.
The first victory went to Ryan Saunders in the 800m A-race, with a very strong sprint finish to set a new PB of 1:53.99. His team mate Joe Blackmore also had the race of his life taking three seconds off his 800m PB. Conor Mugan smashed his PB in the 1500m taking over 7 seconds off it to finish 4th in the A race with a time of 4:04.43. Newcomer Adam Sloan finished 2nd in the A-race of the 3000m steeplechase, with a new PB of 10:01.07 with Rob Hardyman finishing 3rd in the B-race also in a new PB of 10:33.78. Fergus O’Reilly and Rob McTaggart also bought home valuable points in the 3000m race, Fergus also achieving a new PB.
In the field there was a great return to the team from Simon Fricker who won the Shot Putt A competition with team mate Andy Turner second in the B competition. Matt Sloane narrowly missed out on winning the A High Jump, finishing second with 1.95m. Alex Cox won the B competition with a jump of 1.90. Aaron Harris and James Lelliott finished 3rd and 2nd in their Javelin events.
A solid start to the team sees Bournemouth AC placed mid table. The next match of the four is at Yeovil on 3rd July.
