Dorset Schools - 8th June 2013

Match Report by William Kearsey

The weather was almost perfect for the staging of the Dorset Schools Athletics Championships at King's Park last saturday. There were many fine performances by members of BAC competing for their respective school regions of Dorset. Gavin Rusling of Dorset Schools Athletics was kept busy with announcement after announcement as championship records were broken in quick succession, mostly by BAC athletes.

Starting with Year 7, Gemma Kennard broke the high jump championship record with a jump of 1.50m. This broke the previous record of 1.49m which had stood since 1975, a year that certainly post dates the Ice Age, but could be said to be in the middle of the Cold War but most probably even pre-dates when Mick Wills started high jump coaching. Hanah Molyneaux shattered the 1999 shot putt record of 8.98m with a putt of 10.05m. Hannah also oblitereated the 2007 discus record of 20.06m with a throw of 29.25m. Alicia Markham came second with a throw of 21.05m which in most years would have won the competition. Newcomer to BAC, Amelia Dobson came 2nd in long jump adding nearly half a metre on her PB while Michael McElhatton was 4th in the 800m.

Junior Boys championship records were broken in both long jump and triple jump by Patrick Sylla. Patrick broke his 2012 long jump record of 5.96m with 6.54m and the triple jump record of 12.88m from 2004 with 13.20m. Ben Dickinson won the discus with a PB of 32.39m and he also won the javelin with a throw of 47.50m Moinal Uddin was 3rd in 100m, this being his first season in athletics while Glenn Balfour was 9th in the 800m.
