On Sunday 19 June, Jazmin Cooke and her dedicated parents made the long drive to Chelmsford for the South of England Championships. Jaz was all set to take her place in the High Jump line up.

It was a long drive but it went smoothly and they arrived in good time, which boded well and set the scene for a calm start.  The weather actually turned out good which was not the predicted forecast – see nothing is guaranteed!!

Following an ankle injury, Jaz had been building her training back up. Her aim was to improve on her last competition alongside her hopes for a medal.

After marking out her run up, Jaz started off with a practice jump of 1.55m which was perfect. This was a great sign so she left it there. During the event, two contenders went out having failed 3 jumps which left just three athletes in the running for a medal. This meant that Jaz would grab a bronze medal at the very least – happy days!  Staying focused, Jaz went on to jump an impressive 1.65m and on count back (against the third place spot), she was awarded the silver medal! The winner jumped 1.73m which is well within Jaz’s capability when she’s on form and injury free.

All around, it was a great day with both goals achieved; an improvement on the last competition and a shiny silver medal to smile about!

Well done Jaz, you’re powering back!

Earlier in the year, Jaz competed indoors for the first time at both the Southern champs and London Indoor Games. She jumped 1.70m which was a great start to the year and sets a firm foundation for her target PB of over 1.72m.  Jaz’s injury really knocked her both physically and mentally yet she showed true dedication and a strong fighting spirit to come back and win a silver medal in a tough competition. That PB is definitely in sight so it’s onwards and upwards – literally!

Jaz is aiming to compete at the upcoming NAL at her home ground in Bournemouth on 2 July and then targeting the England U23 champs at Bedford in mid-July.

Both events will provide excellent competition and a great experience.

We look forward to seeing more action from this inspiring young athlete!
